| THE PROBLEM Overview
This very day, millions of children will
struggle with the most basic reading and writing tasks. In the US, it is estimated that
between 15-20% of all elementary school students have some level of biologically rooted
reading impairment. Yet, only one out of twenty (just 5% of children who have these
problems) are ever identified and provided with the help they need to overcome their
challenges.
These children are smart, creative
and talented, and they often use their innovation and intelligence to compensate for their
reading problems; but most will never achieve their academic potential. They live in fear
of being called upon to read aloud in class, and are often labeled as "slow" by
their teachers and as "dumb" (or worse) by their classmates. The stigmatization
and damage to self esteem is often irreversible, with reading impaired children often
developing co-morbidity with emotional and behavioral disorders.
Yet, with early identification and
remediation, it is possible to catch these children before they fail. In fact, over 90% of
children with reading problems can learn to overcome their challenges if they receive
appropriate intervention at an early age. Edvocacy's objective is to help these children
apply their considerable skills and talents to enrich their own lives, and to contribute
successfully in the world we all share.
